A spectacular concours restored 1975 Holden Monaro HJ GTS 2 Door Coupe in Mandarin Red with Slate Black/Golf Ball Insert Trim, offered for sale from our Sydney showroom.
Powered by the legendary 308ci 5.0L V8 (L31) and paired with the super desirable (M21) 4-speed manual transmission, this HJ GTS Coupe is one of General Motors' rarest Monaros. Considered as second only in lower production quantities built to the venerable HQ GTS 350 Manual Coupe, the HJ GTS 308 Monaro Coupe is recognised as the last pre-pollution GM Muscle Coupe globally.
One of only 606 HJ GTS coupes, one of only 163 with the 5.0L 4 speed manual, and one of only 20 (estimated) made in the flagship Mandarin Red/Black Golf ball & Red Stripe interior combo.
Built in March 1975 and sold in April 1975 by Bairnsdale GP Motors, Victoria, this stunning example of the General's rarest coupes was rigorously restored in Melbourne in 2022. Showing outstanding presentation as per factory original, and including a comprehensive mechanical rebuild to motor, gearbox, diff, suspension and brakes.
Having purchased this rare car in 1988, the current owner who is regarded as an expert on the HQ-HX models having restored numerous high end Monaros, set about restoring this rare beast to its former glory. Many parts were collected and restored over the years and the car was bare metal restored from ground up and then repainted as per factory in PPG Dulon Acrylic. The GTS wheels are also painted in factory acrylic Silver Metallic & Charcoal and the boot cavity is painted in Satin Black over a gloss black basecoat as per factory as per many genuine Coupes in 1975.
The Monaro expert/enthusiast owner chose to preserve the original matching numbers QT prefixed L31 block out of the car and this is supplied in a very cool showcase with the car. The GTS runs an as per factory November 1973 HQ 308 block (was standard bore now +20 thou pistons), fully balanced, with Brock HDT cam and roller rockers under original rocker covers.
All under bonnet bolts, screws, brackets, clips, hardware are genuine HJ with date coded Packard USA ignition leads and date code correct exhaust manifolds, Q-jet carburettor, thermostat housing, VDO GTS oil pressure gauge, original accelerator cable & spring etc. The motor has had a careful six hour initial run-in and tune on North Geelong Engines dyno for over a week with a final recording at 320hp. It starts and runs very sweet!
The car received a VIC roadworthy certificate when completed in December, 2025.
Many NOS parts were acquired and used in this build including NOS pressure plate, PBR front disc rotors, water pump and NOS shifter upper & lower rubber boots. The Monaro features the factory rebuilt Quadrajet 4BBL carburettor, original air cleaner, standard manifold and dual exhaust system.
The interior has been reupholstered in genuine GMH material by Warren Smith including seat trims, door cards and roof lining. The steering wheel and dashboard are original with all gauges recalibrated. Even the clock is working. All wiring looms are genuine with all their genuine Utilux connectors.
All fasteners are genuine HJ including correct finish and head logo fonts and have been correctly de-embrittled during replating process. Factory torque settings have been applied upon reinstallation where applicable.
The boot area features a new boot mat with concours restored tools and spare.
The GTS rims have been fully restored along with the rare GENUINE HJ long tail centre caps and restored GENUINE GTS wheel nuts. Tyres are BF Goodrich radials 225/60/R14s all round.
