1974 HOLDEN MONARO HQ for sale
Price: $129,500
Genuine 1974 HQ GTS Monaro 308 V8 4 Speed bare metal restored in 2012 and supplied with the original log books, owners manual and brochures now for sale from our Sydney Showroom.
When Holden released the HQ-series in July 1971 the hype was unprecedented. The model became the strongest-selling Holden ever produced with a total of 485,650 cars sold. Its popularity stemmed from a mould-breaking and expensive redesign that went on to underpin GMH's full-size sedan, ute, panel van, coupe and wagon range for nearly a decade.
With the HQ, GMH introduced the first 4 door Monaro. And there was no mistaking the GTS Monaro four-door on the road thanks to the bonnet and boot lid stripes, fender louvres, Monaro GTS badging and chromed GTS rims.
Three engines were offered - a 253 V8, the 308 and the imported 350. You could choose the four-speed manual or 3 speed automatic gearbox and all GTS's received heavy duty stabiliser bars, heavy duty shocks and up-rated springs. Tyres were ER70 H14 radials on 6-inch wide by 14-inch diameter steel "sports" wheels. Braking was via servo-assisted 11-inch diameter ventilated front discs and 10-inch drums at the rear. And a limited slip differential was optional.
All GTS's had five sets of seat belts, carpet, cigarette lighter, flow-through ventilation, day-night mirror, lockable glove box and steering lock. Instruments in the turned gun-metal dash included fuel, oil and temperature gauges, battery charge indicator, speedometer, tachometer and odometer - in other words, GTS instrumentation. A three-spoked sports steering wheel was standard as was a remote control rear vision mirror.
FOR SALE is a stunning example of the HQ GTS Monaro. In Glacier White with Black trim this 1974 HQ GTS features the original matching numbers L31 308 V8 engine, M21 4 speed gearbox and LSD 10 Bolt diff. Delivered new by Smith Motor Company in Port Adelaide, SA to Cadbury Schweppes Ltd, the Monaro was treated to a rotisserie bare metal (photos available) restoration in 2012. All panels, floors, boot and sheet metal is original. And the GTS was painted in the original factory colour with 2 pac Glacier white with Tuxedo blackouts.
All underbody, chassis and suspension parts were powder coated. And the stainless, wheel arch chrome, bumpers and wheel trims were hand repolished. The HQ features the original matching glass all round. And new seals and rubbers were fitted.
Mechanically, the original matching numbers 308 V8 has been fully rebuilt in 2011 and runs a date code correct 4BBL Rochester carby, Yella Terra alloy heads, ACL race series gaskets, +30 thou over size bore, ACL race pistons, Chrome moly rings, a Dynotec stage 2 cam, heavy duty push rods, a balanced and blue printed block with lightened and balanced flywheel with a set of Big Bore extractors and a twin 21/2" exhaust system. The HQ GTS has covered approximately 1,200 Klms from the rebuild and with the mods the car is pushing over 400Hp at the flywheel.
The M21 4 speed gearbox was rebuilt with strengthened internals, new seals and linkages. A new starter motor was fitted and the entire car was rewired. The restoration also included reconditioning of the brake master cylinder, steering box, tail shaft and diff.
The interior of the GTS has also received a full restoration with Dynamat sound deadener on the floors and doors. All seat trims have been replaced and new foam bolstering added. Also the hoodlining has been replaced, new carpets fitted, new winder handles, armrests and the centre consol restored with silver inserts and gear lever vinyl boot. The dash has also been restored and features the original Airchief 13 radio with operators manual. There is a CD player in the glovebox and a rear windscreen venetian. All the gauges work and the car is showing 46,539 Kilometres on the clock.
Open the boot and there is the original spare, factory tools and boot carpet. The GTS features rebuilt suspension with Pedders coil springs, Monroe shocks and new bushes, trialing arms, rubbers and tie rods. Brakes have also been rebuilt with discs up front and drums on the rear.
The GTS is riding on the original 14" GTS rims with restored dress rims and caps and Firestone Wide Oval Redline D70-14 tyres all round.
The current owner has had this HQ GTS since 2009 having purchased the car from a previous Adelaide based owner. The HQ is supplied with the original owners log books, a GMH operators manual, Airchief radio manual, two sets of keys, GMH new car brochures and Smith Motor Company documents. The GTS has been fastidiously maintained and serviced by the car enthusiast owner.
