The original Mach 1 Mustang was introduced in 1969 along side the Boss 302, Boss 429, and Mustang Grande. While the Boss Mustangs focused on performance, the Grande focused exclusively on comfort. The Mach 1 was a perfect in-between point. It offered better performance than a standard Mustang although not to the level of the race ready Boss Mustangs and with some nice creature comforts added.

For 2021 Ford brought back the Mach 1 as a limited edition Mustang fitting between the regular GT and the US only Shelby GT350. 50 plus years after the first Mach 1 was introduced, the concept behind the Mach 1 is still the same. To deliver a faster, better-looking and better-handling version of the Mustang GT.

At its core is the 345kW Coyote 5.0-litre V8-engined Mustang GT, but the Mach 1 gets stiffer front and rear suspension sway bars, extra bracing, six-piston Brembo brakes and a high-flow radiator. Ford engineers have also added the rear subframe from the GT350 and GT500, which gives tighter, more precise handling with its stiffer structure and tighter bushings. They've then slapped on a set of the superb MagneRide active dampers as standard. There's also a diff cooler and rear diffuser from the GT500, as well.
