Certainly one of the most revered Holden's of our time, the LJ GTR XU-1 Torana is also one of the most successful Torana race cars and was the car in 1972 that started the then 27 year old racing legend Peter Brock's unbeaten record of 9 Bathurst victories. It was the car that won Brock the hearts of Holden fans around the country and cemented the GTR XU-1 as the giant killer. In 1973, Holden went all out with the development of their Bathurst evolution of the GTR XU-1. GMH produced a special batch of 150 XU-1 Toranas known as Bathurst specials that incorporated many changes designed to improve the performance and racing prowess of the little Torana. The engine numbers of these 150 very special Toranas are listed in a GMH service bulletin, so that Holden mechanics would know how to properly service these highly modified racing machines.

This Purr Pull LJ GTR XU-1 before your eyes is one of these very special Toranas!

Still wearing the original Victorian number plates, LPG-191 was originally allocated to GMH's Engineering Development team (Dealer code 269) as a Lang Lang test mule. Paperwork is included that confirms the use of the XU-1 as a Test Vehicle. The XU-1 was used by GMH to test the possibility of fitting an automatic transmission to the XU-1 as well as other engineering purposes, including items that never went into production.

The Torana is presented in maintained condition and is largely unrestored importantly to preserve the originality of this rare car. The original Bathurst spec JP engine is still in place as are the wonderful Triple 175 CD-2 Stromberg side draught carburetors, date correct head, high performance 'HX' camshaft, exhaust valves and springs, the M21 4 speed close ratio '73 Bathurst manual transmission and its original 3.36 fine spline LSD rear end. The exhaust still features the original '73 Bathurst tubular extractors and while the original shock absorbers have been changed, the originals are still retained with the car.

The interior is all day one correct and in excellent condition and the car is showing 91,824 kilometres on the odometer although we cannot verify actual total mileage. The XU-1 is a well known survivor with full ownership history. The first owner after GMH Engineering was Mr. Mike Rowntree. The car was purchased through an internal tender by his father who worked within GMH. Rowntree retained the car for 18 years before selling it to a Mr. Scott Houlahan in 1992. Houlahan then sold the car to Mr. Rob Coulson (autopics.com.au) in 1996. The car was then purchased by Mr. Warren Colley who owned the Torana for the next 25 years and covered 22,000 kilometres with the car during his ownership.

The car has participated in various Torana events over the years. In 2002, it joined 114 other XU1's following behind Peter Brocks famous 28c race car for a unforgettable parade lap around the Bathurst circuit prior to the start of the great race. The car also attended Bathurst in 2004, 2012 and in 2015 enjoying parade laps of the famous track that the car was built for. The XU-1 has also won numerous awards including the John Douglas memorial trophy awarded to the best unrestored car at the event.

The XU-1 comes with a great deal of paperwork including the documentation verifying the original JP engine, the GMH Engineering documentation noting the car as a test vehicle, the original day one Victorian number plates and registration certificates, a copy of the GMH Service Letter noting the engine modifications and idle settings, original keys with Peter Brock key ring and a box of original parts removed from the car including distributor and shock absorbers. The XU-1 also comes with a rare GMH photo of the car at the Lang Lang speed bowl featuring the whole range of Holdens available at the time. This picture was a part of the 25 years of Holden celebrations from 1948 to 1973.

Originally ordered with the nibless steel wheels, the XU-1 is now fitted with XU-1 Sprintmaster mags and good tyres.

A very special Torana and one that deserves pride of place in any Holden or Torana collection. This is not only a one of 150 Bathurst homologation special Toranas produced, it is also one of only 3 in the stunning colour of Purr Pull and interestingly a documented GMH Engineering test vehicle. But even more importantly it is a true survivor!

Never out of registration. Victorian LPG-191 and 73-BATH plates are included in the sale. In our Sydney Showroom for your inspection. (Ref. 5999)

If you wish we will gladly arrange a video tour of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door enclosed transport anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
