1972 HOLDEN TORANA LJ for sale

Mount Panorama, Bathurst provided the track that played out the rivalry between Holden, Ford and Chrysler.

Win at Bathurst and you had just bought yourself the greatest ad campaign for your brand.

And in 1972, a very young Peter Brock did just that in his LJ GTR XU-1 and in the process put an end to the Falcon GT-HO's dominating grip on The Mountain.

While the Monaro with its 350 cubes of V8 grunt could trounce a Torana GTR to 97km/h by 3.9 seconds, the GTR weighed in at one tonne, or 500kg lighter than the Monaro and Falcons.

And the lighter, more frugal XU-1 allowed for fewer pit stops. Harry Firth's modifications gave the XU-1 a 3.3 litre 6 cylinder engine, the Monaro 350's front brake discs, stiffer suspension with new spring rates, a quicker steering rack and a larger 64-litre fuel tank.

Qualifying for 1972's race revealed the Torana 3.3-litre still lacked the Falcon's dry pace, despite 212km/h on Conrod Straight, but rainy conditions rewarded its nimbler package and Peter Brock's wizardry in the wet. He finished first by eight minutes to steal the winner's ribbon from Ford's hands and cement the Torana into this hall of fame.

AMCS is proud to offer for sale this stunning example of the 1972 LJ GTR XU-1 Torana. Fresh from a full nut and bolt restoration, this little beauty is finished in factory Lone O'Ranger Orange with Black trim.

In 10/10 condition, this XU-1 is perfect wherever you look. Opening the bonnet reveals this restoration is period correct to every detail from those wonderful triple Stromberg 175 CD carbys, the genuine XU-1 head, the JP engine block, big nut brake master, glass bowl fuel filter. And the list goes on. There is amazing attention to detail here. And then turn the key and hear the throaty 3.3 litres of Bathurst winning 6 cylinders come to life. There is nothing like hearing those Strombergs feeding delicious super fuel to that great little Aussie six. And the exhaust note is just brilliant.

Open the doors and the interior is an utter delight. Fully restored with all new black trim, all gauges recalibrated and working like clockwork and not one mark on the dash. You'll feel transported back to the heyday of 1972. The car's presentation and stance is exceptional. And the attention to detail and finish from the inside to the outside including the boot and the engine bay is unbelievable and needs to been seen to be appreciated.
