1977 HOLDEN TORANA LX for sale
Price: $295,000
For sale is a well-known genuine 1977 LX SS Torana A9X Hatchback in spectacular Jasmine Yellow with Slate Black trim for your inspection from our Sydney Showroom.
The most enduring memory for many Aussie Muscle car enthusiasts is Brocky pounding around Mount Panorama in 1979, in the Marlboro HDT A9X Torana Hatchback, six laps in the lead, hanging the rear end out through McPhillamy whilst waving to the cheering crowd as he set a new lap record on the last lap to win the Bathurst 1000 great race.
And ALL A9X Toranas have this same blood line pulsing through their veins. A little bit of Bathurst, Brocky and good old Aussie determination all wrapped up in one bloody sexy Hatchback motor car.
Only 405 A9X Toranas were made for the road, 305 4 door sedans, and 100 Hatchbacks, to homologate the new rear floor pan and 4 wheel disc brakes for Bathurst. Making the A9X Hatchback amongst the rarest Aussie muscle cars ever made. Of the 100 Hatchbacks produced, best guestimates today believe that only 50 to 60 still survive.
For sale is this one of only fifteen A9X Hatchbacks built in Jasmine Yellow, this one with the popular Slate Black trim. A genuine A9X Hatch, this car was modified many years ago by the then long term owner who replaced the original HT engine with a non matching numbers Australian 308 V8 engine. He retained the original M21 gearbox and added a Hurst shifter and also upgraded the standard GU4 diff to a bullet proof Ford 9". These were the days when no one worried about originality. They just wanted their Tory to go like the clappers.
The Torana presents as an older partial restoration and wears its iconic A9X body kit including the wide body flared guards, front spoiler, rear spoiler and bonnet cowl with Aussie pride. The A9X is finished in its factory colour of Jasmine Yellow with A9X black out bonnet. The car has had paint in some areas with original paint showing in the door jambs. The chrome bumpers are in good condition and the glass is original with tint fitted by the original owner.
Open the door and you will be greeted with a tidy interior finished in its factory black slate with golf ball style inserts. The factory steering wheel had been removed by the original owner and replaced with a Momo sports wheel which is still in place. There is an Autometer Sports-Comp tacho mounted to the steering column and a duo of small Autometer gauges reading oil pressure and water temp in the top of the console.
Pop the bonnet and you will find a tough built Holden V8 engine. When the original engine threw a rod out the side of the block, the current owner wanted to make sure he built a faster one. He went to Walkinshaw and purchased a six-bolt main block and then sent it away to Vic Currie Race Engines in Taree NSW. They stroked it to 383ci and fitted it out with all Harrop internals, Crane roller rockers, Edelbrock manifold and Holley double pumper carby. The engine is paired to the factory four-speed M21 manual transmission with Hurst shifter.
The factory diff gave up not long after replacing the engine, so it was swapped out for a nine-inch with 3.55 centre and Mosler 31 spline axles. At some stage early in its life the front cross member and steering rack were replaced by the original owner. The brakes have also been upgraded to a set of HQ racing brakes that still look quite factory but stop far better than the originals. The original fuel tank has been replaced with a stainless 130L drop tank. The car has been fitted with a VDO kill switch system.
The A9X sits on a set of 14" Cheviot Hotwires with a genuine A9X spare rim in the boot.
One of the biggest factors with these collector Aussie muscle cars is trying to authenticate them. This car has been independently inspected by ICAARS who have confirmed its authenticity. It retains its original unique A9X floorpan and the factory chalk markings under the carpets. The presence of this along with factory paint located around the car has allowed experts to confirm this is in fact the genuine item.
Obviously not every factory built muscle car can survive in day one condition. However, the price reflects the fact that this example is not a day one example. It is, however a genuine one of 100 built A9X Hatchback Toranas. And unlike it's perfect brothers is certainly a car that can be driven and enjoyed as the maker intended. The A9X is supplied with a full ICAARS report, ownership history and two sets of keys.
These A9X hatchbacks are without doubt one of the most desirable Aussie muscle cars. The fact that perhaps only 55 A9X Hatchbacks still survive combined with their incredible racing history in the hands of Peter Brock only adds to the story and makes this A9X a very tempting proposition.
For sale from our Sydney Showroom. (Ref. 6561)
And if you like we will gladly arrange a video inspection/road test of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door freight delivery anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
