1973 HOLDEN MONARO HQ for sale
Price: $99,500
Genuine 1973 HQ GTS Monaro 308 V8 automatic in unrestored condition with factory A/C and power steer now for sale from the Batemans Bay area of NSW.
When Holden released the HQ-series in July 1971 the hype was unprecedented. The model became the strongest-selling Holden ever produced with a total of 485,650 cars sold. Its popularity stemmed from a mould-breaking and expensive redesign that went on to underpin GMH's full-size sedan, ute, panel van, coupe and wagon range for nearly a decade.
With the HQ, GMH introduced the first 4 door Monaro. And there was no mistaking the GTS Monaro four-door on the road. With blacked out window frames, bonnet and boot lid stripes, fender louvres, solid Monaro and GTS badging plus the heavily chromed GTS rims the GTS was given a heavy dose of "masculine, sporty appearance".
Three engine were offered - a 253 V8, developing 185 bhp and two optional V8 engines, the 308 (developing 240 bhp) and the imported 350 (275 bhp). You could choose the four-speed, floor-mounted gearbox or 3 speed automatic gearbox and all GTS's received heavy duty stabiliser bars, heavy duty shocks and up-rated springs. Tyres were ER70 H14 radials on 6-inch wide by 14-inch diameter steel "sports" wheels. Braking was via servo-assisted 11-inch diameter ventilated front discs and 10-inch drums at the rear. And a limited slip differential was optional.
All GTSs had head restraints, five sets of seat belts, carpet, cigarette lighter, flow-through ventilation, day-night mirror, lockable glove box and steering lock. Instruments in the turned gun-metal dash included fuel, oil and temperature gauges, battery charge indicator, speedometer, tachometer and odometer - in other words, GTS instrumentation. A three-spoked sports steering wheel was standard as was a remote control rear vision mirror.
And to top it off, the full range of GMH options, including integrated air-conditioning, push-button radio, power antenna, tape player, dual exhaust system, vinyl roof, laminated windscreen, super lift shock absorbers and power windows, were available.
FOR SALE is a 1973 HQ GTS Monaro in stunning Mustard with Chestnut trim. Delivered new by Beazley & Bruce P/L, Canberra, ACT, this Monaro has led a charmed life in the dry Canberra air and retains most of its original factory acrylic paint. The bonnet and boot black outs are showing some patina. The engine bay, door jambs and boot are all presented in factory paint. The GTS is running a fully rebuilt strong 308 V8 with only 7,000 Kilometres since the rebuild. Internals include L34 heads and intake, Hypatech flat top pistons, Dynotech Stage 3 hydraulic Cam, 4BBL Holley carby (Rochester Quadrajet is supplied) with extractors through to a 2 1/2" exhaust to 3" tail pipes. The factory M40 3 speed Trimatic gearbox has been services and the HQ still retains the GV2 3.36 limited slip differential. The GTS is optioned with factory air-conditioning, power steering, Air Chief radio (supplied) and the GV2 LSD.
The interior of the GTS is all original except for a re-trim to the seat facings of the driver and passenger seats. The GTS retains the original carpets, door cards, crash pad and steering wheel. All the gauges work and the car is showing 130,675 Kilometres on the clock.
Open the boot and there is the original spare, factory tools and original boot mat. The GTS features rebuilt suspension and is riding on the original 14" GTS rims with excellent dress rims and caps and near new Bridgestone Supercat 215/65R14 tyres.
The current owner has had this HQ GTS for over 21 years having purchased the car from a previous Canberra owner. The HQ is supplied with a GMH operators manual, two sets of keys, receipts for the engine rebuild. The GTS is also supplied with a Holden Historical Services verification letter. The GTS has been well maintained and serviced by the car enthusiast owner.
The GTS is currently on club registration. Located in the Batemans Bay area, NSW for your inspection. (Ref. 6526)
And if you like we will gladly arrange a video inspection/road test of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door freight delivery anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
