1970 FORD MUSTANG Boss 302 for sale
Price: $98,500
For sale is a resto-mod 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Tribute, ground up restored as a Parnelli Jones Trans Am race car. For sale from Newport, NSW.
Trans AM racer Parnelli Jones is regarded as racing royalty in the USA. Jones was the winner of the 1963 Indianapolis 500 race and was the first to break the 150 mile per hour "barrier" in qualifications in 1962 with one-lap and four-lap qualifying speeds of 150.729 and 150.370 miles per hour, respectively. He broke both records the following year and led the field for 167 laps on his way to an impressive victory at a record average speed of 143.137 miles per hour.
In 1970, Parnelli Jones was competing in the Trans-Am Series at the Riverside International Speedway in his Boss 302 Mustang when he was pushed into the fence and sustained damage to the right side of the Mustang. He was eventually black-flagged for smoke, pitting for emergency repairs to the leaking transmission seal. Meanwhile, his Ford team mate George Follmer opened up a huge lead and was seemingly headed for an easy victory.
However, Jones worked his battered Mustang into third place behind Donohue's Javelin. With ten laps to go Follmer and Jones were running nose to tail, their domination of the Trans-Am in their Boss 302s so complete that they had only each other to race with. The Jones-Follmer showdown ended with Follmer suffering a shift linkage breakage, leaving him without third gear. Jones cruised past to cap off a tremendous 1970 season with a win at Riverside.
FOR SALE is a superb tribute to this famous Parnelli Jones race number 15 Boss 302 Mustang. Restored in Australia at a cost approaching $250,000, this Mustang was file finished rotisserie restored in Grabber Orange with Black trim. The Boss may look like a stock 70s Boss 302 Mustang but this car has been resto-modded to make driving this Mustang a truly inspiring experience.
Starting life as a genuine 302 V8 Mustang, the motor was rebuilt with 1970 date coded 351 big valve heads, a Holley 650 Vac Secondaries, MSD ignition, an aluminium radiator with thermo fan, mild cam and extractors with Hooker mufflers through to a 21/2" dual exhaust. Gears are swapped via a custom US sourced aluminium 4 speed Top Loader gearbox with a Hurst Quickshifter and hydraulic clutch, then through to a new 9" LSD. The Boss build included the fitting of a RRS brake package (4 wheel discs) and RRS power steering (Right hand drive Rack and Pinion) plus RRS Coil-Over adjustable suspension.
On the inside, the factory black interior features new black seat trims, door cards, carpets, hood lining, dash and aluminium and wood steering wheel. The Boss 302 is fitted with Vintage Air air-conditioning, a full Dakota Digital and Analogue dash fitted to the factory gauges and a retro sound system including Bluetooth. The Boss is also fitted with a Hurst shifter with Hurst shifter boot. There is also custom mounted fire extinguisher in the passenger foot well plus custom fitted floor mats.
The Mustang is riding on rare original Minilite alloy wheels with BF Goodrich tyres all round 235/60R15 on the front and 275/60R15 on the rear.
This is a high-end Australian restoration with no expense spared. A stand out example of the 70s Mustang and a great looking easy driving resto-mod tribute to the famous Trans Am racing Boss 302 of Parnelli Jones.
